UHF Tagging – the Future of the Animal Tracking & Identification

Electronic animal identification is an important technology in modern animal husbandry providing great benefits. For animal breeders and livestock owners, RFID-enabled tags provide convenience and reliability. For the livestock industry, the introduction of Low Frequency (LF) RFID tags few years ago considerably improved the accuracy and speed at which individual animals could be identified. However, LF technology has limitations in terms of reading range and signal collision (i.e. only one tag can be read at once). PURE technology has further extended its comprehensive product portfolio with a newly developed ear tag with tailor-made UHF inlay, an innovative RAIN RFID product that effectively overcomes previous limitations.

Comparison Of LF & UHF Transponder Ear Tags

A number of UHF ear tags for cattle and other species are now commercially available. UHF ear tags potentially have a number of advantages. The read-range is much higher (in the order of meters compared to decimetres in LF-RFID) depending on the type of UHF transponder chosen. Usually, a medium read-range of about 5 m is chosen for cattle ear tags. This makes UHF more adaptable to reading off the identifications at commercial locations such as auction markets, abattoirs, animal transport vehicles, etc. The UHF transponders themselves are capable of storing information as opposed to just containing a unique identification code, and data transfer rates are orders of magnitude faster. UHF technology implements anti-collision as standard which means that multiple tags can be read simultaneously, for instance, a batch of animals passing through an opening would not require singulation to be read effectively.

New Level Innovative UHF Ear Tag

FlexTrackr has specially launched different types of RFID tags for UHF animal identification and tracking. They can be applied to animal ear tags of different sizes and shapes such as pigs, cattle, and sheep. Unlike other common aluminum etching labels in the market, FlexTrackr’s rigid PCB tags and flexible FPCB labels have better working performance. After a long time of UV irradiation, extreme temperature changes, rain washing, and other harsh outdoor conditions, these RFID tags still maintain the original read and write performance without any signal attenuation. In addition, these electronic tags are still very competitive in terms of cost, just slightly higher than the ordinary aluminum etched labels.
